It's not a nightmare if you're awake...

Ana's grandmother has died in a horrific fashion.
Soon, she finds herself under assault by the same supernatural forces.
With nowhere else to turn to, Rafe, a low-level magical detective comes to her aid.
He's been tracking the creature, and the box that appears to draw it forth. Together, they set out to put an end to the malevolent fiend once and for all.

But all is not as it seems with the entity that's hunting Ana down.
Nor is all as it seems with Rafe, or Ana for that matter.
Everyone has secrets, and some secrets are powerful enough to kill.

The Spirit Box is a gripping, fast-paced urban fantasy thriller that will captivate fans of Neil Gaiman, Lev Grossman and Izzy Shows,

The Spirit Box The Freelancers Lee Isserow 9781521276952 Books

Review of THE SPIRIT BOX
by Lee Isserow
(THE FREELANCERS #1)

Immediately I was totally engrossed in this story, and am eagerly anticipating the next in this new series. Author Lee Isserow has quite the imagination, and here he successfully balances magic and mundaneity, weaving them together in such a way that opening a door to another country seems natural, as does demolecularizing oneself to pass through walls and fences. <smile> I readily suspended any disbelief and threw myself into the story line. Magickian Rafe Carter, the scion of a line of strong magickians, is himself—not quite. He's feckless, determined, knowledgeable—but life just keeps throwing him wrenches in the works, tripping him up, no matter how determined and dedicated is he.

The twists are sharp and unexpected, the characters are truly delightful. This story is definitely a winner in my estimation.

The Spirit Box The Freelancers Lee Isserow 9781521276952 Books Reviews

This is the first full length novel in The Freelancers series (there is a short story prequel), and a fine beginning it is. The tale includes a nice combination of magic and detection murders performed by a demonic possessed box. Despite the grisly subject matter, the atmosphere is light and humorous. Rafe, the detective, is short on magic and slightly accident prone. Ana, next in line to be murdered, is a feisty woman; able to take the unexpected in her stride, and will not go down easily. The pace of the story is good, with plenty of action. The character building works well as Rafe and Ana get to know one another.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It was a good get away from real life. With a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, and a bit of magic, the hour sped by and soon I found I was finished, and hungry for the next in the series. This one gets 5 stars from me.
Amazing! Taking something as innocent and inconspicuous as a wine box and have it filled with evil. I'm absolutly delighted when it was not even something Pan-ish, but something devlishly wild, unforgiving and surprising. It takes a stroke of genious in the Author to come up with such an original and mesmerizing tale. Vividly and fully developed characters and surroundings displayed in a story that is bulletproof and fast paced and brings the reader on a magical thrill-ride like nothing I've read before. I'm awestruck and greatly impressed with the level of skill shown by this creator of tales. This was the very first book I've read from this author but it will most definitely not be the last! And the story oh my I could not put down the book. It is Outstanding, and definitly one of the best books I've read in quite a while!
What makes it so outstanding.. I strongly suggest you read it and find out, you wont be sorry. 😬
Great exciting story.
a fun read and I will want to read the second book at some point in the future. have other books in front of this one.
I enjoyed this start to the Freelancers series. There was enough mystery to keep me actively engaged. And the pacing kept the action moving forward. I will certainly pick up the next book.
Down on his heels freelance sort of magician works a job and meets a girl with magic lineage and no knowledge of it. They form a partnership while fighting an evil creature that kills people. If you liked the Magicians or Harry Potter you will enjoy this story.
Not Unlmited but got both books on freebie days. Look at the writer's page, he writes a bit of every genre and he writes a lot, so definitely should be something of interest. {The other 5 books are kindle unlimited and for sale or sale soon. The Cloud one probably are as well and are being written as the before the Freelancers, totally, but still about the main guy and what goes on with him}
