Most people play the game total immersion VR with full neural sync. But Hank lives it.

In Unlimited Combat, he's one of the best. He makes his own luck. And he plays solo. Until now.

When a player offers Hank fame and fortune, it's too good to pass up. To succeed, Hank must fight harder than ever before, pushing past the game's safety protocols. His life is on the line, and when he's captured, he knows he's in too deep.
Meanwhile, Hank's father escapes into an online world where he can relive his military past. In real life, there's conflict between father and son, now they're heading for a deadly collision in VR.

In the game, you can be anyone you want, but how will you know who to trust?

It's time to plug in and play. Just make sure you play to win.

From the author
CHEATC0DE is a perfect read for fans of gamelit, cyberpunk and technothrillers - it's a page-turning fast-moving story, and like Ready Player One, will be enjoyed by those who are interested in role playing games, GameLit, LitRPG, speculative fiction, and VR technology. It is not necessary to be a gamer or to have played role playing games to enjoy this book. In CHEATC0DE, while technology and VR are important to the plot, the characters are what drives the story forward.

The sequel to CHEATC0DE is called The Trust.

CHEATC0DE (The Downlode Trust Book 1) eBook Michael Campling Reviews

The author game me a free copy of this book, and I voluntarily provide this review.
This author attaches the reader firmly to Hank, the young gamer who gets dragged through astounding experiences with upgrades by both his own and a "frenemy's" manipulations. Not being a gamer but definitely interested in a computer's workings, I found this book to be mesmerizing. Hank's home life sent him searching for some respite and control--but he got far more action and distraction than he wanted. And he learned far more than he expected. The surprises at the end left me smiling, eager to read the next book(s).
This was a great read that I finished in two days; I had to sleep you know. It starts off with a young man coming home and getting immersed in his favorite game, only this game requires you to access your brain to play without using a controller. A war game like many of you have played . However, as he reaches his pinnacle, he teams up with another player who leads him into a secret level of the game. Hang on to your rifles!
The action is truly nonstop and interesting. There is some violence, but no sex scenes or innuendos, which is surprising today. I really like the way this guy writes. The book was free at the time I got it and I will be reading more of this author in the future, free or not! Pet Peeve why do people have to curse using someone's deity? I often wonder if they intentionally mean to ostracize a certain group of people who could possibly be stable customers? Mabe they don't think at all.
I really enjoyed the story. I wasn't sure what to think of the characters or what I wanted to happen exactly, but I ended up caring for them as the story progressed. Nevertheless, when the end came, I thought... that's it?

SPOILER ALERT.

The book is well-written and it had me captivated until the end. I wanted to find out what happened, and I loved some of the writing devices and descriptive portions used to fill in the spaces between action.

That said, here are a few things that are bugging me about the book

The rules of the "game" are not well-defined from the start, so as the story progresses the main character's exploits and touted problem-solving skills feel more like the author cheating and introducing new mechanics simply to help the protagonist.

I was really looking forward to seeing the Father and Son reunited, and I anticipated a drawn-out, comedic scene where both are shocked to find the other and are even more shocked to find out what they have been up to. The time comes, and... the reunion falls flat. It's way too short, and they both seem to act out of character for it. They have a touching moment according to the author, but I couldn't see it personally.

Lastly... the "final confrontation" with Will (the antagonist) consists of them insulting him and then running away. He doesn't even try to stop them. When the "good guys" try to find him and stop him later, it is revealed that he could escape all along, and he is long gone. This begs the question why in the world didn't Will (or whatever his other form's name was) just steal the key himself? He was locked up (but with the ability to escape at any time) only a short distance from the room where it was held.
The virtual reality Mikey Campling has created in this book is still out of reach of today’s technology, although perhaps not by much. It sure looks a lot like the next logical step on the road to the Oasis in Ready Player One. There are a couple of hints at the beginning of Hank’s game session that more than one game is available, but he plays the same game all the time, one where he feels confident and capable. Within his game, he’s developed skills that have been noticed by others. Not everyone in the game is there for recreation.

Although most of the book takes place inside the game, the story is about the people involved more than the setting. Hank’s relationship with his father is the core of the story, even as he retreats to his room to play his game alone. There are more than a couple unexpected developments in this story.

I loved this book and I hope the ending means that Hank may be back in another book soon. Definitely recommended!
So. What if you could make a lot of money playing your favorite online game? Then, what if your favorite online game turned out to be a little more real than you thought?

Cheatcode is a great read for lovers of cyberpunk and MMO's. It's well written and well paced. It will draw you in from the beginning.

Although it's a stand alone novel, it will leave you ready to read more from the very same Mikey Campling Universe. Enjoy!
Unlimited, think all of his books are. Now down to business; I never do 'reviews', there is the blurb and enough reviews giving a rundown of the plot ad infinitum so... Cheatcode, Continue? which is exclusive for subscribers which can find link for that one and others at the back of this book, and just coming out due to hit soon The Trust which is basically Cheatcode 2. I know this because just finished reading it, and soon you can too.
I found Mikey Camplings book CHEATC0DE for free on promo. Any gamer or sci-fi reader will enjoy this book. It is a mostly action packed read with plenty of futuristic VR tech to drool over. Most of the book deals with our main character playing a massive MMO in which Campling develops for us a well-detailed world and has us concerned for the characters. Hey, that's what we want in a book right? Put it on your to read list. note you will probably want to read the next in the series.
