Isaac Asimov's Foundation novels are one of the great masterworks of science fiction. As unsurpassed blend of nonstop action, daring ideas, and extensive world-building, they chronicle the struggle of a courageous group of men and women dedicated to preserving humanity's light in a galaxy plunged into a nightmare of ignorance and violence thirty thousand years long.

After years of struggle, the Foundation lies in ruins, destroyed by the mutant mind power of the Mule. But it is rumored that there is a Second Foundation hidden somewhere at the end of the Galaxy, established to preserve the knowledge of mankind through the long centuries of barbarism. The Mule failed to find it the first timebut now he is certain he knows where it lies.

The fate of the Foundation rests on young Arcadia Darell, only 14 years old and burdened with a terrible secret. As its scientists gird for a final showdown with the Mule, the survivors of the First Foundation begin their desperate search. They too want the Second Foundation destroyed, before it destroys them.

I read this as a boy, and was amazed. Read it just now , the 4 book series, and still am. Sweeping through time and space Isaac , Doctor Asimov, weaves a fascinating tale of the future, viewed from an even more distant future. Sympathetic characters, a collection of intricately pictured imaginative worlds combine to tell a masterpiece. Should Rome come to mind, it would not be an accident, btw. Have read almost all of Asimov's books, and can not get enough!

Second Foundation (Audible Audio Edition) Isaac Asimov Scott Brick Random House Audio Books Reviews

"Second Foundation" is the third book in the "Foundation Novels," and is pretty good. It is a nice conclusion to the original trilogy. One big problem, however, is the fact that the writing style is so much different than the first book. It is almost like another author wrote this book. This is not such a bad thing, except it just has a totally different feel to it from the rest of the series thus far. I like my multi-book series's to have a continuity of voice and prose that make it just seem like one big novel, broken up into little pieces.

The problem lies in the characters (or lack there of) between the books. "Foundation" had so many more characters and each of them was in the book for a very short amount of time. Then, in "Foundation and Empire," there are fewer characters, and each is in for a little more time - not much, but a little. Then in "Second Foundation," the characters are in the book for... [wait for it...] the WHOLE BOOK! It's a good book, just drasically different from the previous books in the terms of writing style. It seems that each book in the series has grown by a factor of ten as being a well written story.

Hopefully if this continues, then "Foundation's Edge" will be a blowout, except I think I recall saying that in my "Foundation and Empire" review. All in all, good book, but definately not the best.
Second Foundation is the conclusion to the original Foundation trilogy and focuses on the events following the Mule's conquest of the First Foundation. Can the Seldon Plan for a peaceful Second Empire recover from the severe damage inflicted by the mutant Mule? The first part of the book takes place soon after the awesome ending of Foundation and Empire and describes how the Mule is finally thwarted. The "final battle" with the Mule was somewhat anti-climactic but still made a good ending to the first part.
The second part takes place a couple decades later and examines the First Foundation's search for the mysterious and hidden Second Foundation. This part comprises most of the novel and takes much more concentration to understand everything that's happening. There are several major twists throughout this second part so you must read carefully if you want to try to figure things out before Asimov reveals the answers!
Essentially, the Second Foundation is desperately trying to get the Seldon Plan back on track (after it was bent by the Mule) and is forced to manipulate key individuals, something which was never done before. However, some smart people in the First Foundation figure out that individuals are being manipulated and deduce that the Second Foundation is at fault. So the search is on to find and destroy the Second Foundation before too many people are in their control.
Second Foundation ties up virtually all loose ends introduced in the first two books and is a superb read. As with many Asimov novels, the last chapter has a major twist (actually, two) that gets you flipping back to see if it makes sense in the context of what happened before. As usual, it does. -) I recommend reading Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation before reading the original trilogy. Now it's time for me to read Foundation's Edge and I can't wait!
Generic review for Asimov's books because I bought all of them for my collection and am writing ALL of the reviews at once.

I love everyone of his books, and each brings a great story to the table, if you are looking for a good Saga to start reading, check out his Foundation / Robot series. I've read them all the way through several times and each time, loved each book. Each book builds off the one prior and adds a whole new dynamic to the overall universe while still being able to be enjoyed individually. If you are reading this review, Just check out the book, I guarantee it will be worth it.
The third novel in Asimov's classic Trilogy. Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman once mentioned that the story underlying the Foundation Trilogy helped propel him into Economics. Strangely, it did the same for me. The notion of using a statistical model to accurately predict the course of events over a millennia is more than provocative. Asimov's writing style is a bit dated and lacks prose. But this story is one of his best. Don't buy this book until you've read the first two novels.
Plagued in our day with violence by religious fundamentalists, and political extremists with "revolutionary" agendas, Asimov's foundation trilogy is well-worth reading, despite being "dated" in some ways. I see that he was struggling with what fundamentalist "millenarians" mean for us. There is certainly their explicit power agenda, which is obvious and may be extremely difficult to overcome, as indicated by the first foundation. Seldon's plan is the millennial, one must say quasi-religious, creed partially hidden in the background, and defended by the "propaganda" tool, the second foundation. Asimov presents this organization almost as a cancer that has a deviousness that makes it almost impossible to overcome, but perhaps not too omnipotent that it cannot be countered and controlled to a certain extent. The three novels, overall, have their clumsy spots, and Asimov is not one of the great creative geniuses, with respect to fiction-writing. Thus, there is much about which one can heap criticism. However, the totality of the effect of the novels (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation) is one of startling brilliance. While perhaps not in the pantheon of great fiction writers, Asimov has created in this series what must certainly be something of compelling intellectual interest, and ranks easily among the best science fiction I have read.
I read this as a boy, and was amazed. Read it just now , the 4 book series, and still am. Sweeping through time and space Isaac , Doctor Asimov, weaves a fascinating tale of the future, viewed from an even more distant future.
